ClearBerth / PNR status
Check your PNR status
Type the 10-digit PNR from your ticket. See if it is confirmed, RAC or waitlisted, and your coach and berth, in one place.
PNR status, right now.
Free. A short ad plays first, and there are no banner ads. It is easier to see in the app.
How to check PNR status
- Find your PNR. It is the 10-digit number at the top left of your ticket. For an IRCTC e-ticket it is also in the confirmation SMS, the email and under Booked Ticket History.
- Type it in the box above and tap Check PNR.
- Watch the short ad. It pays for the free check. The result appears right after.
- Read your status. You see the train, the journey, each passenger's status and, when the ticket is confirmed, the coach and berth.
Your PNR changes as people cancel and as the chart gets made, so check again closer to the journey.
What the PNR status codes mean
| CNF | Confirmed. You have a berth or seat. The coach and berth are shown once they are allotted. |
|---|---|
| RAC | Reservation Against Cancellation. You can board and you get a seat to sit on. Two RAC passengers share a side lower berth until a full berth frees up. |
| GNWL | General Waitlist. Waitlist for tickets booked from the train's starting station. This is the waitlist with the best chance of moving up. |
| RLWL | Remote Location Waitlist. For tickets booked from or to smaller stations along the route. These move up the least. |
| PQWL | Pooled Quota Waitlist. For passengers booked between intermediate stations, in a shared quota. |
| RSWL / TQWL | Roadside Station and Tatkal Waitlist. A waitlist inside a specific quota. |
| CAN | Cancelled. The ticket was cancelled. |
| Chart prepared | The final reservation chart is made. Whatever your status is now is what you travel on. A ticket still on the waitlist at this point is not confirmed. |
Will my waitlisted ticket get confirmed?
Nobody can promise it. A waitlisted ticket moves up when someone ahead of you cancels. In general, the lower your waitlist number and the earlier you are, the better your chance. Check often, and always check once more after the chart is prepared. The final chart is usually made a few hours before the train leaves.
If an e-ticket is still waitlisted when the chart is prepared, IRCTC cancels it and refunds it under the railway rules. Do not plan to travel on a waitlisted e-ticket.
Where is the PNR on my ticket?
On a printed ticket or the e-ticket PDF, the PNR is at the top left. It is always 10 digits. The train number, date and your passengers are listed right next to it.
PNR status: common questions
How do I check PNR status online?
Type your 10-digit PNR in the box at the top of this page and tap Check PNR. After a short ad, you see the status of every passenger on the ticket.
Is checking PNR status free?
Yes. The check is free. A short ad plays first, and that pays for it. There are no banner ads on this site.
What is the difference between RAC and waitlist?
An RAC passenger is allowed to travel and gets a seat to sit on, which can turn into a full berth if someone cancels. A waitlisted passenger has no seat until the ticket is confirmed, and cannot travel on a waitlisted e-ticket.
Why does my PNR show no coach or berth?
The coach and berth appear only when the ticket is confirmed and the seats are allotted. For RAC and waitlisted tickets they come later, if at all.
Is ClearBerth the official IRCTC site?
No. ClearBerth is an independent service for Indian Railways travellers. Book and cancel tickets on IRCTC or through your usual booking route.
Easier in the app
The ClearBerth app shows your berth on a diagram, tracks your train live and alerts you when your waitlist moves. Free to start.
